The Tundish Review Issue 4, Brisbane

The Tundish Review
The Tundish Review Issue 4 was launched on Wednesday night at Betty's Espresso & Bar in Brisbane. The zine includes poetry by Jarad Bruinstroop, Juanita Simmonds, Ankita Bellary, Sean West, Sam Bolte, Shastra Deo and two pieces from me. I was also interviewed for this edition, I don’t usually talk or write much about my process but I really enjoyed the questions from the editors, as well as some of the discussion we had about why they wanted to interview me. The launch was packed with people and was such a fun night of poetry and drinks.

The artwork by Link Raptor is really interesting and fits well with this edition of the zine, the piece he drew for my poem, Axolotl Limbo, gave me a new perspective on the work. One of the ideas I like in the zine is the use of a fictional editor, this creates space for experiments, as well as character for the publication. The two real life editors, Katelyn Goyen and Nick van Buuren, have put a lot of love into this zine, they’ve promised that there will be a call out for issues 5 & 6 shortly, so make sure you have the latest copy, submit your work, and like the zine on Facebook

You can probably grab a copy by contacting them through their website or facebook, and you can definitely get editions at Junky Comics.

Here are some photographs of the launch (taken by Anton van Buuren), you can find more here.

The Tundish Review Issue 4 Launch

I am part of the 22 November launch of Brisbane zine, The Tundish Review. The editors were not only kind enough to accept two of my poems, but they also interviewed me for the edition.

Putting together any publication takes commitment and effort, and putting one together full of other writers, artists and performers deserves support. So get to Betty’s Espresso & Bar at 7:30pm on Wednesday 22 November to hear poetry from Ankita Bellary, Sean West, Shastra Deo, Jarad Bruinstroop, Juanita Simmonds, Sam Bolte and me. Then grab a copy of the zine. Thanks to the editors Katelyn & Nick.

The theme of the issue is Space

I have a new poem in the sixth issue of the zine Today, the voice you speak with may not be your own, the theme of the issue is Space.
Today, the voice you speak with may not be your own
The piece was developed from the astrophysics report Planet Hunters X. KIC 8462852 - Where's the Flux? and uses an online tool to apply a modified version of the S+7 Oulipo procedure invented by Jean Lescure.

The work has been published alongside pieces from Ian Gibbins, Elena Kotasvili, Nathan Shepherdson, Renee Vaughan Sutherland and Annie Te Whiu.
This is what the zine series creator Pascalle Burton has to say about the series, ‘The zine consists of the words, images and concepts of others. Expect found and visual poetry and collage, plus contributions from other artists and poets. Even the title of the zine series must be attributed to DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid.’

Letters to a Suburb from You Are Here

One of the projects I managed as a You Are Here co-producer this year was Letters to a Suburb.
Image credit: Pascalle Burton and Sarah Kaur
The project involved commissioning writers and artists with a connection to Canberra to write to a suburb within the Australian Capital Territory. I generally kept the terms of reference as vague as that for each of the people I asked to be involved, though sometimes I called specifically for a poem, or wanted a writer and artist to work together.

The project got a great response at the independent publishing fair on Sunday 23 March. We set up a letterbox from which people could collect a letter and 90 copies were taken by visitors to the fair.

The festival also posted one-hundred copies to random addresses within the suburbs to which the letters were addressed. I hope the recipients enjoyed the work they received.

You can check out all the work online on the You Are Here website by following the link above.

The letters commissioned come from David “Ghostboy” Stavanger, Pascalle Burton, Adam Hadley, Good Ghost Bill with Paul Summerfield, Duncan Felton, Matt Hetherington, Tessa Rose, Fiona McLeod with Aaron Kirby, and Zoe Anderson with Raphael Kabo.

Franked excogitate

Paul Summerfield and I have been working for months and months on our new joint zine.

The extended period of production has been the result of a combination of him becoming a father and running his own business, and my day-job plus other writing and performing projects, including BAD!SLAM!NO!BISCUIT!, YouAreHere, and The Tragic Troubadours.

This is the cover of the zine. All art is by Paul Summerfield, all words are by me.

We are taking it to the Canberra Zine Emporium on Saturday 23 March in Rabaul Lane, Canberra.

Our last zine was called Franked; we will have copies of that too.

One-hundred word reviews - the Canberra Zine Fair, Saturday 3 July 2010

Swapping zines was the first most fun part of the Canberra zine fair. The second was exploring all the constructions people brought together on 3 July. Warmth, enclosed space, mince-meat in fried potato, and caped people meant the hours flew as a community circled the zinester filled art-space. Forays across stalls returned plastic knives, paper-boats and white stockings with sensible shoes. Sitting behind the stall meant discovering that you live beside active volcanos while Viking trolls are on the hunt for new lamp shades. And you had the opportunity to pass on messages of your own, rather than mixed tapes.
